MLK Day of Service 2021

On Monday, January 18, we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Today more than ever his message resonates: embracing the differences of others, peacefully bringing positive change to our country and building a “Beloved Community” by serving each other and lifting up those in need.

The MLK Day holiday is more than a day to commemorate the work of a visionary man, it is also designated as a National Day of Service. We are all officially called into action; to make it a “Day On not a Day Off.” While reflecting on his legacy, take some time to plan how you will help build a stronger local community on MLK Day and throughout the year.

COVID-19 has created increased need in communities across the U.S. In fact, millions of Americans are facing hunger for the first time. Nonprofits are working feverishly to support our neighbors in need while keeping volunteers safe and observing social distancing guidelines. Thanks to technology, there are ways you can support your favorite nonprofit and take part in service on MLK Day right from your own home.

You can search MLK Day of Service opportunities near you here. Or, consider contacting a nonprofit today to inquire about virtual volunteering opportunities by offering administrative support or services in your own area of expertise such as marketing, accounting, or web design.

Another way to serve our communities on MLK Day is by supporting our local nonprofits with donations of cash or goods to support their programs. Most nonprofits’ websites offer a simple way to donate cash online. Donating goods in the time of COVID-19 is rather tricky but YouGiveGoods’ free giving platform provides a safe way by running virtual drives to raise and donate brand-new goods such as healthy food, hygiene items, diapers, coats, books and more for the nonprofit of your choice.

Finally, social media makes it simple to lend your voice to a cause. You can help by spreading the word in your social networks about need in your community and opportunities to help.

YouGiveGoods celebrates the efforts of all those who will take part in the 2021 MLK Day of Service. We can’t wait to hear about all the good deeds done in the name of the great man we honor on January 18. Though he spent his life embroiled in a terrible struggle, it is fitting that his legacy is one of unity, community, and a brighter future for all.

In honor of the MLK Day of Service raise food & supplies for a nonprofit struggling to meet increased need due to COVID-19
