At the Riverwest Food Pantry we know that everyone has gifts to share. This is what we call our Community of Generosity. Even though COVID-19 has changed the way our Community of Generosity looks, we are committed to protecting, nourishing, and growing everyone in our community now more than ever.
WHY A VIRTUAL FOOD DRIVE?
In addition to scaling back our our team from hundreds to a small staff and a handful of core volunteers we have moved all food distributions to a “pick-up service” of pre-bagged food in order to prevent the spread of infection.
We also have ceased all local food drives and drastically scaled back produce rescue, requiring us to adapt to new ways of stocking our inventory. Of the 300,000 pounds of food that the Riverwest Food pantry distributes to our community every year, 60,000 pounds comes from local food drives and another 70,000 comes from rescued produce. The loss of these two sources of inventory, food drives and rescued produce together, is valued at $16,300 per month.
This crisis is magnifying the burden so many are carrying. We just received a beautiful note from a shopper who went through our drive-thru pantry: "I lost my job… and with the new virus floating around, the job opportunities have practically stopped. It was the first time I have ever used a food pantry. Your staff were so kind; I got a little teary-eyed as they loaded up my trunk with bags of food.”
At the Riverwest Food Pantry, we know that giving of ourselves and serving others changes us. We give so that we become more aware of the burdens others carry. We serve so that our hearts are enlarged to understand these burdens. Every act of giving has the power to change us and reshape our world.
Thank you, as always, for standing with the Riverwest Food Pantry. Our community needs each other now more than ever.
